چکیده

In this paper, we propose a Markov Decision Process model for an empty repositioning problem in a two-port system. We consider two cases. The first case is the offline case, where demand information is assumed as a random variable with known distribution. The second case is online case where demand information is partially known. In both cases, we figure out the optimal controlling policies. The second case enables the possibility to conduct an online optimization taking the advantages of real-time information. KeywordsEmpty container repositioning, markov decision process.

An optimization model for management of empty containers in distribution network of a logistics company under uncertainty

In transportation via containers, unbalanced movement of loaded containers forces shipping companies to reposition empty containers. This study addresses the problem of empty container repositioning (ECR) in the distribution network of a European logistics company, where some restrictions impose decision making in an uncertain environment. The problem involves dispatching empty contain...

A set-covering formulation for a drayage problem with single and double container loads

This paper addresses a drayage problem, which is motivated by the case study of a real carrier. Its trucks carry one or two containers from a port to importers and from exporters to the port. Since up to four customers can be served in each route, we propose a set-covering formulation for this problem where all possible routes are enumerated. This model can be efficiently solved to optimality b...

Markov Chain Anticipation for the Online Traveling Salesman Problem by Simulated Annealing Algorithm

The arc costs are assumed to be online parameters of the network and decisions should be made while the costs of arcs are not known. The policies determine the permitted nodes and arcs to traverse and they are generally defined according to the departure nodes of the current policy nodes. In on-line created tours arc costs are not available for decision makers. The on-line traversed nodes are f...

Incorporating Maritime Stakeholder Perspectives for Implementing an 'Inland-Depots-for-Empty-Containers' System Using an Analytic Hierarchy Process

Container movement involves several stakeholders where each group is focused on achieving its own objectives. By actively considering the perspective of different maritime stakeholders, this paper identifies a set of implementation strategies and prioritizes them to successfully implement an ‘Inland-Depots-for-Empty-Containers’ (IDEC) system in a region. It builds on the authors’ earlier work t...

The container shipping network design problem with empty container repositioning

This paper addresses the design of container liner shipping service networks by explicitly taking into account empty container repositioning. Two key and interrelated issues, those of deploying ships and containers are usually treated separately by most existing studies on shipping network design. In this paper, both issues are considered simultaneously. The problem is formulated as a two-stage...
